Bonjour! It's time for a little French indulgence! Cognac is a type of brandy that's rich in flavor and aroma. This nectar of the gods is much stronger than regular brandy or whiskey, with hints of vanilla and caramel coming from the oak barrels in which it is aged.

To be considered Cognac, the grapes must be sourced from specific regions of France such as Ugni Blanc and Folle Blanche, and it must also be distilled twice and aged for at least two years in oak barrels.

You'll probably also notice a qualification on cognac bottle labels, too: VS means Very Special (aged for 2 years), VSOP means Very Superior Old Pale (aged 4 or more years), and XO means Extra Old (aged 6 or more years). When it comes to cognac, taste varies. Like wine, its younger varieties can be light and fruity while its aged versions can be more complex, richer or even spicier.
